This four-day meeting is being held under the theme "Regulatory environment for accelerating access to Water Supply and Sanitation services with focus on sanitation and climate resilient systems: leaving no one behind'

The Sixth UN Sustainable Development Goal aims at ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

In his opening remarks, the Director General of RURA, Patrick Nyirishema has called for collective effort, information and experience sharing to improve water supply and sanitation services in the region.

"I would also say that Rwanda has made tremendous progress particular in sanitation services where the entire population understands the value of maintaining clean environment", RURA DG pointed out while speaking to the media after the official opening of the conference.

The 12th Annual General Meeting is special in a way that there is a launch of a project aimed at strengthening regulatory framework in the area of sanitation services, a three year and half project funded by Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

Commenting on the essential role of the project, Emilio Muchanga, the chairperson for ESAWAS revealed that the initiative will facilitate access to sanitation.

"It includes collection, transportation and disposal. Safe disposal is considered in this initiative", Muchanga indicated.

In October 2018, ESAWAS conducted a Peer Review in Rwanda and provided a report showing where Rwanda is performing well and some gaps to be covered.

The Eastern and Southern Africa Water and Sanitation (ESAWAS) Regulators' Association was created in 2007 and ratified a constitution in 2010.
