RURA, ICT stakeholders discuss the contribution of the fourth industrial revolution to the national economic growth

Kigali – Rwanda, March 2, 2018 - Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) hosted a day-long workshop on the fourth industrial revolution that brought together all key ICT players from across Rwanda including the private operators, the representatives from the Ministry of Information Technology & Communications, among others with the aim of positioning the country as a technology hub.

At the top of the agenda were the interactive sessions on disruptive technologies and strategy to build a vibrant ICT sector in Rwanda, and the participants exchanged and shared ideas on how the fourth industrial revolution is meant to play a crucial role in achieving Vision 2020 goals aimed at making Rwanda a middle income country and then shift to the Vision 2050 launched in 2016 by the President of the Republic of Rwanda, H.E Paul Kagame.

Addressing the forum, Lt Col. Patrick Nyirishema, the Director General of RURA said that the country is committed to promoting ICT based innovations as far its sustainable development is concerned.

“It’s time for us to take advantage of technology based innovations and grow all sectors for the sake of our national economic growth and the well-being of Rwandans”, said Lt Col. Patrick Nyirishema in his opening remarks

“The biggest driver for this vision 2050 is this fourth industrial revolution we are talking about today. So, ICT is behind the transformation of our country and we have to make sure that we are not lagging behind in this tremendous revolution.” Added Lt Col. Nyirishema.

This workshop was a great platform to discuss the draft regulation for sandbox, which is defined as safe house where pilots of specified types of innovative products and services can take place.

The Regulatory sandboxes allow businesses to test innovative products, services, business models and delivery mechanisms in a live environment, without having to immediately comply with all regulatory requirements.

This workshop was organized at the right time as the government of Rwanda has decided to build a technology based economy in light of accelerating the development of the country.
